It's interesting that we seem to be programmed to see faces in everyday objects. We often recognise faces in clouds for instance. Whilst walking on the beach I noticed this face and once I saw this one, I was forever seeing faces in rock formations. One viewer of this painting counted twenty faces, though the only one that was intentional was the main one looking left to right. The title 'stoney faced' is a perfect example of my intentions within 'a different world'. What it is that is there in the everyday; the screaming reality of life! The rock formation appears to be a mix of sandstone and iron ore and was found along the North East coast. From a painting point of view, the challenge was to create a 3D effect to draw the viewer in. To view the painting at its best it is advised to avoid a side light highlighting the textures as this was not the intended purpose of the texture. The textures were built from the use of sand, chalk and seacoal. The painting itself being acrylic which was built from many layers of paint.
